Alhamdulillah (الحمد لله) is one of the most important and most spoken phrases in Islam. A Muslim says it dozens of times a day — after sneezing, after eating, after prayer, when asked how they are, and at every moment of gratitude. But what does it actually mean, and why is it so powerful?
الحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ
Al-hamdu lillāh
"All praise and thanks belong to Allah"
What Does Alhamdulillah Mean? (Word by Word)
The phrase consists of three Arabic components, each with a profound meaning:
الْ
Al-
The definite article "The" — meaning ALL praise, not just some
حَمْدُ
Hamd
Praise, gratitude, and glorification combined
لِلَّهِ
Lillāh
Belongs to Allah — entirely, exclusively
Why "Al-Hamd" is deeper than just "praise":
In Arabic, hamd combines three concepts: praise (madh), gratitude (shukr), and glorification (thana'). The "Al-" at the beginning makes it comprehensive — "ALL praise, ALL gratitude, ALL glory." This is why no single English word fully captures its meaning.
When you say Alhamdulillah, you are declaring: "Every single form of praise, gratitude, and glorification that exists — all of it belongs exclusively to Allah, not to any created thing."
Alhamdulillah in the Quran
The Quran opens with Alhamdulillah and it appears throughout in key places, showing its supreme importance:
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
"All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all the worlds." — This is the second verse of Surah Al-Fatiha, which is recited in every rak'ah of every prayer. Every Muslim says Alhamdulillah at least 17 times daily in Salah alone.
📖 Quran 1:2 — Surah Al-Fatiha
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَجَعَلَ الظُّلُمَاتِ وَالنُّورَ
"All praise is due to Allah, who created the heavens and the earth and made the darkness and the light." — Praising Allah for the miracle of creation itself.
📖 Quran 6:1 — Surah Al-An'am
وَقَالُوا الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي هَدَانَا لِهَٰذَا
"And they will say: All praise is due to Allah who guided us to this." — The inhabitants of Paradise will say Alhamdulillah upon entering it.
📖 Quran 7:43 — Surah Al-A'raf
وَآخِرُ دَعْوَاهُمْ أَنِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
"And the last of their call will be: All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all the worlds." — The final dhikr of the people of Paradise.
📖 Quran 10:10 — Surah Yunus

Teaching Children to Say Alhamdulillah
Alhamdulillah is one of the first Islamic phrases a child should learn — even before formal Quran lessons begin. Here's how to teach it naturally:
- Model it constantly: Say Alhamdulillah out loud in front of your children — after eating, when something good happens, after sneezing.
- Connect it to feelings: When your child experiences something good, prompt them: "What do we say? Alhamdulillah!"
- Teach the sneeze response: Children love the back-and-forth of the sneezing Sunnah — it's interactive and memorable.
- Explain it simply: "Alhamdulillah means we're saying Thank You to Allah for everything He gave us."
- Surah Al-Fatiha connection: Once children begin learning Salah, they discover that Alhamdulillah begins the Fatiha — the prayer they say 17 times daily.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Alhamdulillah mean in English?
Alhamdulillah (الحمد لله) means "All praise and thanks belong to Allah" in English. The phrase combines hamd (praise + gratitude + glorification) with lillah (belonging to Allah alone). It is one of the most comprehensive expressions of gratitude and worship in any language — it acknowledges that every blessing comes solely from Allah.
Is there a difference between Alhamdulillah and Alhamdulillah Rabb il Alameen?
"Alhamdulillah Rabb il Alameen" (الحمد لله رب العالمين) is the extended form from Surah Al-Fatiha, meaning "All praise to Allah, Lord of all the worlds." Adding "Rabb il Alameen" specifies that Allah is the Lord and Sustainer of everything in existence — every world, every dimension, every being. The shorter "Alhamdulillah" is used more broadly in daily conversation.
Can non-Muslims say Alhamdulillah?
Any person can say Alhamdulillah — the words themselves are Arabic and can be spoken by anyone. However, the spiritual reward and the deeper meaning of praising Allah are matters of faith. When a Muslim says Alhamdulillah, it is an act of worship (ibadah) that carries immense reward from Allah.
How do you respond when someone says Alhamdulillah?
After a sneeze: respond with "Yarhamukallah" (may Allah have mercy on you). In general conversation, there is no required response — you may simply acknowledge or say it yourself. If someone says Alhamdulillah after good news, you can respond with "MashaAllah" or add your own Alhamdulillah in agreement.
How many times should you say Alhamdulillah?
There is no maximum — say it as often as you wish. Specific Sunnah occasions include: 33 times after each prayer (as post-salah dhikr), once after sneezing, and whenever you experience a blessing or gratitude. The Prophet ﷺ said it fills the entire scale of deeds — so saying it abundantly is always encouraged.
