Surah Al-Waqiah (سورة الواقعة — "The Inevitable Event") is the 56th chapter of the Quran with 96 verses, revealed in Makkah. It takes its name from its opening word describing the Day of Judgment — the event that will certainly occur. It is one of the most-recited surahs in Muslim homes, famously associated with rizq (provision) and protection from poverty.

What is Surah Waqiah about?
The surah opens with the moment the Day of Judgment strikes — when the earth is shaken and mountains crumble to scattered dust — and then divides all of humanity into three groups:
- As-Sabiqun (The Foremost): those nearest to Allah, rewarded with the highest gardens.
- Ashab al-Yamin (People of the Right): the righteous believers, in comfort and honour.
- Ashab ash-Shimal (People of the Left): the deniers, in scorching wind and shadow of black smoke.
The middle of the surah presents four powerful proofs of Allah's power that we witness daily — the creation of man, the seed the farmer sows, the water we drink, and the fire we kindle — each followed by the question: could you create this?
Key verses with Arabic and English
Idhaa waqa'atil-waaqi'ah. Laysa li waq'atihaa kaadhibah. Khaafidatur-raafi'ah.
English: When the Inevitable Event occurs — of its occurrence there is no denial — it will bring some low and raise others high.
Afara'aytum maa tahruthoon. A-antum tazra'oonahu am nahnuz-zaari'oon.
English: Have you seen what you sow? Is it you who make it grow, or are We the Grower?
Benefits of Surah Waqiah
- Protection from poverty: Ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever recites Surah Al-Waqiah every night will never be afflicted by poverty." (Recorded by al-Bayhaqi in Shu'ab al-Iman; scholars grade its chain as weak, but many — including Ibn Kathir — mention the widespread practice of the righteous acting upon it as encouragement.)
- Certainty about the Hereafter: its vivid imagery strengthens iman and softens the heart.
- Gratitude and tawakkul: the four proofs (crops, water, fire, creation) train the heart to see Allah as the true Provider — the deeper meaning behind its association with rizq.
- Part of nightly worship: pairing it with Surah Mulk makes a beautiful nightly Quran routine.
When to recite Surah Waqiah
- Every night — the practice narrated from the salaf, often after Maghrib or Isha.
- Alongside Surah Mulk before sleeping.
- In times of financial difficulty — combined with Istighfar, which the Quran links to rizq (Surah Nuh 71:10–12), and practical effort.
