Surah Al-Ikhlas (سورة الإخلاص) — "The Sincerity" or "The Purity" — is the 112th chapter of the Quran. It has only four short verses, yet the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said it equals one-third of the Quran in reward. It is one of the Four Quls, among the first surahs children memorise, and a cornerstone of every Muslim's daily dhikr.

Quick answer: Surah Ikhlas affirms pure Tawheed — that Allah is One, Eternal, and has no partner, parent or child. Recite it in Salah, morning and evening adhkar, and before sleep. The Prophet ﷺ said whoever loves it will enter Paradise. Want your child to memorise Surah Ikhlas with correct Tajweed? Book a free 30-minute trial.

Why does Surah Ikhlas equal one-third of the Quran?

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (رضي الله عنه) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said to his companions: "Is any one of you unable to recite one-third of the Quran in a night?" They found it hard. He said: "Qul huwa Allahu ahad is one-third of the Quran." (Sahih al-Bukhari 5015)

Scholars explain that the Quran's message centres on three themes: (1) Tawheed — the Oneness of Allah, (2) rulings and laws, and (3) stories and news. Surah Ikhlas captures the entire theme of Tawheed in four verses — so its reward is like one-third of the Quran.

Important: This means the reward of reciting Surah Ikhlas is like one-third of the Quran — it does not replace reading the rest of the Quran. Keep reciting the whole Book, and add Surah Ikhlas abundantly for extra reward.

Benefits of Surah Ikhlas

  • Equals one-third of the Quran in reward (Sahih al-Bukhari 5015).
  • Love of this surah leads to Paradise — a man loved to recite it in every prayer; the Prophet ﷺ said: "Your love for it will admit you to Paradise." (Sahih al-Bukhari 774)
  • Morning & evening protection — recite Surah Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas three times each morning and evening; they suffice against everything (Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud).
  • Before sleep — the Prophet ﷺ recited the last three Quls, blew into his hands, and wiped over his body (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017).
  • In every Salah — it is a perfect short surah after Al-Fatiha, especially for children and beginners.
  • Strengthens Tawheed — it protects belief from shirk and clarifies who Allah truly is.

When should you recite Surah Ikhlas?

  • In Salah — after Surah Al-Fatiha in any rakat.
  • Morning and evening — three times with Al-Falaq and An-Nas.
  • Before sleeping — as the Prophet ﷺ did.
  • After every obligatory prayer — many scholars encourage reciting it as part of post-Salah dhikr.
  • Anytime you want reward — because of its immense virtue, recite it often throughout the day.

How to teach Surah Ikhlas to kids

Surah Ikhlas is ideal for children because it is short, rhythmic and full of meaning:

  1. Listen first — play a clear Qari (e.g. Mishary or Al-Husary) and let your child hear it daily.
  2. One verse at a time — start with "Qul huwa Allahu ahad," then add the next verse when the first is solid.
  3. Explain simply — "Allah is One. He has no mum or dad. Nobody is like Him."
  4. Use it in Salah — once memorised, let them recite it after Al-Fatiha in prayer.
  5. Correct Tajweed early — letters like ح in "Ahad" and ص in "As-Samad" need a live ear. A tutor prevents mistakes that stick for years.

Most children memorise Surah Ikhlas in a few days to one week with short daily practice. Pair it with the other 4 Quls for a complete protection set.
