How to do tayammum step by step is one of the most searched purification questions after wudu and ghusl — especially in travel, illness, or water shortage. Tayammum is a mercy: dry purification with clean earth when water cannot be used.

Quick answer: Make intention, say Bismillah, strike clean earth (or a dusty pure surface) once with both palms, shake off excess, wipe the face, then wipe the hands — commonly up to the wrists. Tayammum replaces wudu (and ghusl when needed) until the excuse ends. Pair with wudu and what breaks wudu.

When is tayammum allowed?

  • No water available after reasonable search
  • Water is present but using it would seriously harm health or delay recovery
  • Extreme cold with no safe way to heat water (case-by-case — ask a scholar)
  • Other genuine inability recognised in fiqh
Not a shortcut: Tayammum is not for laziness when safe water is easy. It is for real inability or harm. When the excuse ends and water is usable, return to wudu/ghusl.

Tayammum steps (common teaching)

  1. Intention (niyyah) — in the heart: purify for salah (or remove the impurity state) with tayammum.
  2. Bismillah — begin in Allah’s name.
  3. Strike clean earth — place both palms on pure dust/earth (or a surface with pure dust) once.
  4. Shake or blow lightly — remove excess dust so the wipe is light, not muddy.
  5. Wipe the face — once, covering the face area wiped in wudu.
  6. Wipe the hands — commonly the hands up to the wrists (some detailed teachings differ on extent — follow your school).

You may then pray. One valid tayammum can cover the prayers it remains valid for under your school’s rules, similar in spirit to how wudu covers multiple prayers until nullified.

What surface can I use?

Often acceptableAsk / be careful
Clean earth, sand, stone dustFilthy or impure surfaces
Dusty pure wall/ground where dust liftsWet mud that is not “dust” in the fiqh sense your school requires
Travel dust kit prepared for this purposeRandom chemicals or impure powders

What ends tayammum?

  • Whatever breaks wudu (for tayammum done in place of wudu)
  • Finding or becoming able to use safe water
  • The excuse of harm ending

If you performed tayammum in place of ghusl, learn from your teacher when a full ghusl becomes required again. Ghusl overview: ghusl step by step.

Illness and hospital settings

If water would worsen illness, tayammum may be the correct route. Keep a small amount of clean dust if advised, and pray in whatever posture you can. This is not medical advice — coordinate purity rulings with a scholar and medical guidance with your doctor.

FAQ

How do you perform tayammum step by step?+

Intend purification, say Bismillah, strike clean earth with both palms, remove excess dust, wipe the face, then wipe the hands (commonly to the wrists). Follow your school for fine details.

Can I do tayammum if water is available but I am sick?+

If using water would harm you or delay recovery, many scholars allow tayammum. Confirm your personal case with a qualified teacher.

Does tayammum replace ghusl?+

When ghusl is required but water cannot be used, tayammum may take its place temporarily according to fiqh rules — then perform ghusl when able.

How many times do I strike the ground?+

A common teaching is one strike for face and hands. Some detailed opinions differ — follow the method your madhhab/teacher teaches consistently.

Tayammum keeps the door of salah open when water cannot. Learn it before you need it — travel, illness, and hardship are easier with preparation.
