Parents are among the greatest blessings Allah gives us. Islam places them right after worship of Allah Himself — and one of the most powerful ways to honour them is through dua for parents. The Quran teaches a short, unforgettable supplication that millions of Muslims recite daily: Rabbirhamhuma kama rabbayani saghira.

Quick answer: The best dua for parents in the Quran is from Surah Al-Isra (17:24): "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they raised me when I was small." Recite it after every Salah, in sujood, and whenever you think of your parents — whether they are alive or have passed away. Full Arabic, transliteration and meaning below.

The main dua for parents (Surah Al-Isra 17:24)

QURANIC DUA FOR PARENTS · Surah Al-Isra 17:24
رَبِّ ارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا

Rabbir-hamhumaa kamaa rabbayaanee sagheera.

English: My Lord, have mercy upon them both as they raised me when I was small.

Word-by-word meaning

ArabicTransliterationMeaning
رَبِّRabbiMy Lord — the One who nurtures and sustains
ارْحَمْهُمَاIrhamhumaaHave mercy on both of them (mother and father)
كَمَاKamaaJust as / in the same way
رَبَّيَانِيRabbayaaneeThey raised me, nurtured me, cared for me
صَغِيرًاSagheeraWhen I was small, weak and completely dependent

This dua connects two mercies: your parents' mercy toward you in childhood, and your prayer that Allah's mercy may cover them in return. You can never fully repay parents for sleepless nights, sacrifice and love — but this dua asks Allah, whose mercy is unlimited, to reward them.

Why does the Quran command this dua?

Allah says in Surah Al-Isra:

"Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you be dutiful to your parents. If one or both of them reach old age with you, do not say 'uff' to them nor repel them, but speak to them a noble word. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say: My Lord, have mercy upon them as they raised me when I was small." (Quran 17:23–24)

Notice: immediately after commanding worship of Allah alone, Allah commands kindness to parents — then teaches this exact dua. Honouring parents through dua is an act of worship.

Second Quranic dua for parents (Surah Ibrahim 14:41)

SURAH IBRAHIM 14:41
رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الْحِسَابُ

Rabbanaghfir lee wa liwaalidayya wa lil-mu'mineena yawma yaqoomul-hisaab.

English: Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers on the Day when the account is established.

Prophet Ibrahim (عليه السلام) made this dua — asking forgiveness for himself and his parents. It is especially meaningful when praying for deceased parents who need Allah's forgiveness and mercy in the Hereafter.

Dua for parents who are alive

When your parents are still with you, this is the time to maximise your dua and your kindness. Recite Rabbirhamhuma daily and add personal duas such as:

  • O Allah, grant my parents long life in obedience to You
  • O Allah, cure them if they are ill and ease their pain
  • O Allah, guide them and increase them in faith
  • O Allah, expand their provision and bless their home
  • O Allah, make me a source of comfort, not difficulty, for them

The Prophet ﷺ said: "The pleasure of the Lord lies in the pleasure of the parent, and the displeasure of the Lord lies in the displeasure of the parent." (Tirmidhi 1899). Making dua for them is one of the greatest acts of birr (righteousness).

Dua for deceased parents

When a parent passes away, your dua does not stop — it becomes even more important. The Prophet ﷺ said that when a person dies, their deeds end except for three: ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah), beneficial knowledge, and a righteous child who prays for them (Sahih Muslim 1631).

For deceased parents, recite:

  • Rabbirhamhuma kama rabbayani saghira — asking Allah's mercy
  • Rabbanaghfir lee wa liwaalidayya — asking forgiveness (Surah Ibrahim 14:41)
  • Personal dua: O Allah, forgive my mother/father, have mercy on them, expand their grave, and admit them to the highest level of Paradise without reckoning

Also give sadaqah on their behalf, perform Umrah or Hajj if possible, and stay connected to people they loved. These acts reach them in the grave, by Allah's permission.

  • Forgiveness for you — birr toward parents is a cause of Allah forgiving the child
  • Acceptance of your duas — the righteous child's dua for parents is powerful
  • Peace of heart — knowing you are fulfilling a Quranic command brings tranquillity
  • Teaching the next generation — when your children see you make dua for your parents, they learn to make dua for you

How to teach children the dua for parents

  1. Explain simply: "This dua asks Allah to be kind to Mum and Dad because they took care of us when we were little."
  2. Break it into parts: Teach "Rabbirhamhuma" first, then add "kama rabbayani saghira."
  3. Listen and repeat: Play a clear recitation and let your child repeat after it daily.
  4. Model it: Make the dua out loud after Salah so children hear and copy you.
  5. Connect to action: Teach that dua goes with kindness — helping parents, speaking gently, not raising your voice.
