Can you name all 12 Islamic months in order? Most Muslims know Ramadan and Muharram — fewer can recite the full Hijri calendar. Yet Allah says in the Quran: "Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve months in the register of Allah from the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred." (At-Tawbah 9:36). Here is every month, its meaning, and the key dates inside it.

The four sacred months
Muharram, Rajab, Dhul Qa'dah and Dhul Hijjah are the months Allah declared sacred — sins weigh heavier and good deeds carry greater reward. Three are consecutive (Dhul Qa'dah → Muharram) surrounding Hajj; Rajab stands alone in the middle of the year.
Why Islamic months move ~11 days each year
The Hijri calendar is lunar — each month begins with the sighting of the new crescent and lasts 29 or 30 days, giving a year of ~354 days. That is why Ramadan drifts through all seasons over a 33-year cycle: every Muslim generation experiences fasting in both summer and winter. The calendar counts from the Hijrah — the Prophet's ﷺ migration to Madinah (622 CE), chosen by Umar (RA) as year 1.
Worship calendar — what to do in which month
- Muharram: fast the 9th–10th (Ashura) — expiates the previous year's sins.
- Sha'ban: increase voluntary fasting, prepare for Ramadan.
- Ramadan: fasting, Taraweeh, and a Quran Khatm plan.
- Shawwal: six fasts = reward of fasting the whole year (Muslim).
- Dhul Hijjah: first 10 days are the best days of the year; fast Arafah (9th) if not on Hajj — see Labbaik meaning.
Memorization trick for kids
Group them as 4-4-4: (Muharram, Safar, two Rabis) → (two Jumadas, Rajab, Sha'ban) → (Ramadan, Shawwal, two Dhuls). Sing them to a simple rhythm at bedtime for a week — most children lock all 12 in within days. Islamic calendar, duas and stories are all part of the Islamic Studies course for kids.
